The increasing significance of the Middle Corridor is reinforcing Georgia’s position as a key transit hub in the broader region. Given the ongoing transformations in global supply chains, the full development of the Middle Corridor not only creates new opportunities but also further strengthens Georgia’s role in international trade, as the world increasingly seeks alternative and safe transportation routes. In this context, reliability is often becoming more significant than transportation speed or cost alone.

Global context: why now?

Following Russia’s full-scale military aggression against Ukraine, Europe fundamentally reassessed its transport connectivity logic. The Northern Corridor, which passed through Russian territory, is no longer considered politically viable. Alongside this, the strategic importance of the Middle Corridor becomes particularly evident when compared with the strait of Hormuz. Persistent tensions and periodic military escalations in the strait of Hormuz continue to expose the vulnerability of the global economy to overreliance on a single strategic route. Against this background, the Middle Corridor offers an important alternative that enhances the resilience, flexibility and diversification of global supply chains.

European Integration as a force multiplier

Upon Georgia’s accession to the European Union, there is a reasonable prospect that at least two of the nine core corridors of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) could be extended to Georgia through strengthened Black Sea regional connectivity. Inclusion in the TEN-T would mean that Georgia’s infrastructure would no longer be of merely regional significance but would become an integral part of the EU’s logistics system. This would also facilitate the development of high-standard roads, railways and port infrastructure through EU financing mechanisms. Furthermore, within the framework of the Trans-European Networks for Energy (TEN-E), Georgia already has prospects for integration into the Black Sea energy corridor through the Black Sea submarine electricity cable project. In parallel, the Black Sea fiber-optic connectivity initiative provides opportunities for Georgia’s digital integration with European Union networks.

Georgia’s strategic positioning

Georgia constitutes a central linkage within the Middle Corridor. The sea ports of Poti and Batumi, the East–West Highway, the national railway network and the prospect of developing the Anaklia Deep Sea Port collectively establish the country as the region’s principal logistics gateway. The planned increase of the corridor’s capacity to 10 million tons in the future is expected to generate substantial growth in transit revenues, attract foreign direct investment and create additional job opportunities.

Risks & challenges

The Middle Corridor’s potential cannot be fully realized without overcoming existing challenges. Infrastructure deficiencies, difficulties in harmonizing customs procedures and regional security risks remain significant obstacles. Furthermore, a halt in the European integration process coupled with distancing from Western partners, could leave Georgia increasingly excluded from major regional initiatives and create favorable conditions for the expansion of Russian political influence.

As the Middle Corridor continues to evolve, the Black Sea region undergoes strategic transformation and global power dynamics are increasingly reshaped, Georgia’s significance as a strategic connectivity hub is expected to increase even further, particularly in the context of future European Union membership. The country’s long-term success will depend on its ability to effectively leverage its geographical advantages, develop modern transportation, logistics and energy infrastructure, deepen strategic partnerships and remain firmly committed to the objectives of European and Euro-Atlantic integration. These factors will strengthen Georgia’s geostrategic and geoeconomic relevance, enhance its international competitiveness and further consolidate its pivotal role as a regional connectivity hub.
